Denver, CO – 9NEWS annually recognizes nine outstanding Colorado teachers, nominated by colleagues, friends, parents and students, for excellence in educating Colorado’s children. 9NEWS is proud to name Lisa Owsley of Poudre High School a winner of this year’s 9Teachers Who Care award.
Owsley specializes in teaching students with severe physical and cognitive disabilities in her school’s Independent Living Skills (ILS) program. Her selfless dedication to her students and to eradicating some of the prejudices that follow special needs children contributed to her award. She launched a national program at Poudre called “Spread the Word to End the Word” to highlight the derogatory nature of the word “retarded” to describe special needs students. She further wrote an Initiative Grant to secure funding and instruments for the ILS Adaptive Music program wherein special education students learn to play music under the instruction of Poudre’s symphonic band teacher.
