What is MTSS?
MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) is defined as a prevention-based framework of team-driven data-based problem solving for improving the outcomes of every student through family, school, and community partnering and a layered continuum of evidence-based practices applied at the classroom, school, district, region, and state level. What Support Systems are in place for Freshmen?
Every week, counselors host ‘Kid Talk’ meetings with teams of Pathway teachers to discuss student successes and areas of need. The teams brainstorm interventions and strategies designed to help our 9th grade students.
Why Ninth Grade Matters!
The ninth grade pathway teams and the MTSS team at PHS work closely with the Center for High School Success, a nationwide group founded on research done by the University of Chicago. From this group’s research, some core understandings emerged supporting the critical nature of the ninth grade year and a metric known as the On Track metric. At PHS, ‘On Track’ means that a student’s 9th grade performance (passing core classes and good attendance) will lead to an ‘on time’ graduation.

What Support Systems exist for upper-classmen?
Counselors routinely invite teams of teachers together to have problem-solving conversations for students in grades 10-12. These meetings often involve the student and a parent/guardian and focus on action plans to help the student improve academically, behaviorally, or social-emotionally.
